Yesterday despite getting in at 4 am NZ time the night before, we visited Klong Toey, the largest slum in Bangkok to cook up a storm with Poo, making pomelo salad, coconut chicken soup and pad thai. Poo is a nickname for 'rose apple' a fruit. In late 2007, as the price of rice in Thailand doubled, Poo found that she could no longer make a living selling food from her house. An Australian supported Khun Poo to start up her business. From modest beginnings in the front room of Khun Poo’s house (with no English skills) she now runs a very successful cooking school. Yum yum authentic Thai food right from day 1!Kahun
Saiyuud Diwong, affectionately known as Poo (short for "Chompoo" or rose apple), is a long-time resident of Klong Toey,e largest slum in Bangkok. For more than 5 years Khun Poo has been running her cooking school in Klong Toey for tourists as well as local residents. She represents a remarkable model of success ositivity in an often stark and complex landscape of poverty and hardship.
